The Courage to Say No: A 15-year-old Stops Her Own Marriage

At just 15 years old, Priyanka found herself at a crossroads when her family arranged her marriage, a practice still prevalent in many rural communities. However, unlike many girls in similar situations, Priyanka was aware of the consequences of early marriage—thanks to the knowledge she had gained through Aarambh Manch. This platform had equipped her with the understanding of her rights, the risks associated with child marriage, and the means to seek help when needed.

Realizing that she could not face this battle alone, Priyanka turned to her teacher for support. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the teacher promptly involved Kanyashree officials and the child helpline. Together, they intervened and successfully halted the marriage, ensuring that Priyanka’s education and aspirations were not cut short by outdated traditions.

“I want to complete my education first,” Priyanka told the officials. “I have dreams that I need to fulfill before thinking about marriage.”

Recognizing Bravery and Resilience

Priyanka’s extraordinary courage did not go unnoticed. On August 14th, she was honored with a cash prize of 5000 rupees and a certificate by the Sabhapati and the Member of Parliament (MP). Additionally, she was awarded a monthly stipend of 4000 rupees to support her education until she turns 18. This recognition was more than just a financial reward—it was a symbol of her resilience and a message to the community that child marriage is not an inevitable fate.

Her bravery also earned her a special award at the Kolkata Birangana State Government office, where she was celebrated as a role model for other young girls facing similar challenges. Her story has since inspired many adolescents to raise their voices against child marriage and stand up for their rights.

Following the intervention, Priyanka’s parents were counseled about the legal implications of child marriage and the importance of education for their daughter’s future. They have since become supportive of her educational pursuits, marking a significant shift in their perspectives.

The Role of Aarambh Manch in Empowering Young Girls

IIMPACT’s Aarambh Manch program plays a crucial role in shaping confident, aware, and empowered young individuals. Through its life skill sessions, discussions on gender equality, and health and hygiene workshops, the platform creates a safe space for adolescent girls to share their concerns and learn from each other’s experiences. It fosters resilience and independence, enabling them to make informed decisions about their lives.

Priyanka’s story is a testament to the impact of such initiatives. It proves that when young girls are equipped with knowledge and support, they can challenge societal norms and pave the way for a brighter future—not just for themselves but for generations to come.
